'And here he is, first discovered in Sam Mendes's modern-dress production sitting in a leather armchair, wearing a paper crown, blowing on a party squeaker and confiding in the audience with a mixture of wit and creepy intimacy as he outlines his villainous plans. Spacey has long excelled at the dark and sinister, as he proved in such fine films as Seven and Mendes's own Oscar-winning American Beauty. Even when you meet him in private there is something unsettling about him, a sense that beneath the fluent charm something much scarier night be lurking.
He exploits this disconcerting quality to superb effect here, in an often electrifying performance which brilliantly identifies the two forces that drive the 'poisonous, bunch-backed toad' & heartless ambition and a profound self-loathing.'
